(14 words)

A simple morality tale about doing the right thing and being a good person.

THE BRIDGE TO THE BLACK MARKET:

Black Market: Adventure began with an idea by writer/director/producer Brett Williams and grew into a huge undertaking involving many graduates from Deakin University's Media Arts course (where Brett also studied).

In 2002 it was Brett's third year of study at Deakin University. He was co-directing a major film project called Lost Company, a film for which he felt was not a success in terms of storytelling and just making a good, solid short film. After it's required end-of-year screening, no one in the production group opted to take the film anywhere further.

Not long after, Brett finally completed his independent music video project, The Bridge, which had been put on hold during the making of Lost Company. The Bridge went on to screen at the Triple J Moonlight Framebreaks Competition (2003) and later at the St. Kilda Film Festival SoundKilda music video competition (2004).

However, still feeling unfulfilled from Lost Company, Brett began writing a story in early 2003 that would fit into the genre of films that he really wanted to make. Films with adventure, action and humour. Films that you actually wanted to go and see.

The script was started in March 2003 and when Brett finished university mid-semester of that year, he tried his hand at getting funding for the film. However, the script was still only at a third draft and was not ready to receive funding. Not wanting to wait another year for the next round, however, Brett chose to get a new job and self-finance the film as he went.

He found a bar job at Melbourne Airport and continued plugging away at the script. By October, he felt the script was ready and began serious pre-production. October for locations, November for casting and crew, December and January for rehearsals, including karate training/choreography.

Shooting began in February 2004 with a one-day film shoot to get everyone back in the practice of making films, then the majority of the film was shot over a week in March. Pickups took place on various days over the course of several months as we cut the film, until all shooting eventually wrapped in September. It was a huge amount of time in between shoots, as most of that time was spent working to pay for the film.

At this stage, the film is nearing completion for a screening in December 2004. Beyond that, who knows?
