The prologue to Black Market: Adventure was shot on super 8, a incredible medium that is sadly becoming obsolete. I first shot super 8 (8mm film) with my friend Chrissie for our short film, Fragile (2002), then again for The Bridge (2003). Eventually I got my own camera, projector and splicer and have shot a few rolls every now and then whenever inspiration hits.

At the end of principal photography on Black Market, I put 50ft of kodachrome through my camera, getting some footage from Nioka Bush Camp that was different to the video or photos that I had, and also getting some footage of Middle Brighton Beach, where I intended to shoot the prologue, to see how it looked on super 8.

These pictures are very low-fi, as they're taken from a video camera recording of a projection, but that's another thing I love about super 8. It's not about getting pristine images, it's about grittiness and getting your hands dirty.
